This is a video that features our home in Oxford. We moved in October 2015. It took us one year to find this house. I wanted to live in the countryside and Andrew wanted to stay close to Oxford. The Rookery offered the best of both worlds.
We bought this place from a surgeon and a GP who were moving to Devon. They wanted to escape and had trained as gardeners. They practised for their qualification in the garden. This is the reason why it is so special. It comprises of three sections, an English garden with borders, a croquet lawn with beautiful magnolia trees as well as one tulip tree, and a wood. We are situated in a conservation area. This means we need to ask the local council, each time we want to trim or cut down any tree. We are located in a close. It is tranquil. The reason it is called the Rookery is simply due to the lovely birds singing. From the front of the house, where there is a rose garden with a hydrangea, visitors cannot imagine we have such a large and precious garden. When they walk in, they usually get a shock. As a result, it has often be given the name of “secret garden”.
From May to December 2016, we had a lot of work done. The house is built in two parts, an old cottage dating back to the 18th Century and a 20 years old extension. It needed freshening up. We had a stone wall removed downstairs to create a larger room. We asked our builders for the removal of a partition wall upstairs to place a big wardrobe. A new bathroom was installed as well as two new toilets. We selected modern underfloor heating with stone flooring for our entrance hall, lounge and snug. We also had all the pine floors upstairs sanded. We put sisal down on the landing and in one of the bedrooms. We got rid of a cupboard in the kitchen, sanded all of the kitchen units, put new lights everywhere and finally painted the whole house. We also bought new furniture.
We are very proud of “our creation”. From the students’ feedback when they leave, we think it is a success.
Please watch the video to make up your mind. We hope you will find it comfortable and homely.
Welcome to your live and learn home! Welcome to the Rookery!
